Maralie The Board Book 1 edition by F A Rogers Literature Fiction eBooks

This story is a nice introduction to Ms. Roger's The Board series. It's a group of stories set in the small western town of Eden's Hollow. Eden's Hollow was once a booming town, but in recent years its population has dwindled. In an effort to save the town the mayor comes up with a somewhat controversial plan...each year before the planting season, the names of all the eligible ladies are listed on a board which is hung in the center of town. Bachelors are required to pick a woman from The Board to marry. The hope of course is that children will result from the union and thus bolster the town's declining population. Telegraphs are sent around the country in an attempt to attract bachelors to Eden's Hollow. When the story opens the mayor is introducing his plan to the townsfolk. It then jumps to Maralie and Jake. I confess that for a few seconds I was a bit confused until I realized that Maralie and Jake were already married...when we meet them they have been married for three months. How the two meet and the events surrounding their wedding the reader learns about through their thoughts.

The story suffers from the usual drawback typical of books that are this short in length; underdeveloped storyline and characters. Nonetheless, the characters of Jake and Maralie are both likeable and relatable; although I will admit that at first I could have cheerfully strangled Jake. Maralie in particular is a very sympathetic character. She was traveling West with her parents, when they stopped in Eden's Hollow and her parents dumped her--and when I say dumped I mean dumped, as in she went into a store came out and they were gone!!! Why her parents would do such a thing we are never told. From Maralie's thoughts it didn't seem as though she had a particularly bad relationship with her parents, so their behavior was very puzzling. In any event, Maralie's name is placed on the board and she is made to marry Jake, a man she met at the altar. Jake's initial behavior towards Maralie is deplorable. However, once I got his side of the story my feelings towards him softened a little. Within months of his beloved first wife's death, Jake was forced to remarry in accordance with the town's rule. It was either remarry or move. Of course he wasn't happy about having to remarry, but he didn't want to give up his home, so he was forced to comply.

Now three months later, the couple's life together is little better than it was in the beginning. Jake keeps Maralie at arm's length, hardly even speaking to the poor girl. When Reuben Wilson shows up on their doorstep Maralie was so happy to have some company that she practically talked his ear off. LOL Of course Jake is not the least bit happy that another man is hanging around his wife and Reuben's visit is the impetus needed to make Jake begin to change his attitude towards Maralie. Because the story is so short you don't get a whole lot of details. The change in the relationship between Jake and Maralie occurs pretty quickly, over a matter of days, but I got the impression that Jake's feelings towards Maralie had been softening since the beginning of their marriage, even though he was stubbornly--and stupidly I thought--holding on to his resentment and trying to keep her at arm's length. Jake also suffers from the fear of loving and losing another wife, which I found to be very realistic, even though I wasn't happy about the way he went about trying to avoid having to endure such pain again.

Aside from the romance between Maralie and Jake, there is also a bit of intrigue that is introduced and resolved towards the end of the story. Overall I enjoyed this book. It made for a nice, quick read; nevertheless, I do wish the story had more details. This book reads more like a prequel novella than a first book in the series. We get the background on how the idea for The Board was formulated, but you don't actually get to see how it works. With Maralie and Jake already being married at the beginning of the story, the reader is robbed of the chance to go through the entire process with the couple. However, Ms. Rogers herself states in the preface that this book was a way for her to introduce us to Eden's Hollow and Reuben Wilson. Reuben is the hero in the next book in the series, Reuben (The Board Book 2), and from reading that blurb it seems the reader will get the chance to finally see how the board works firsthand. According to the author, Reuben comes with a whole host of brothers, "each with the same issue--how to pick a woman from The Board." Presumably each brother will get his own story. Ms. Roger's comments, coupled with the story that unfolded in this book, adds credence to my belief that MARALIE is more of a prequel novella that a first book.

As for the technical aspects, this book is quite excellent. I really enjoyed the author's writing style, the book is beautifully edited--shocking that as it appears that Ms. Rogers self-published--and the story is quite entertaining. I would definitely read another book in this series. FYI this is a clean story. Happy reading!

Maralie The Board Book 1 edition by F A Rogers Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I absolutley loved this book! Being introduced to the town of Edens Hollow could not have gone better. Edens Hollow is a dying community grasping at straws to stay alive. So the mayor decides to entice young single men to their community by offering land...with one stipulation; they had to marry. The town puts up a board where there is a list of eligible women and the men that came to their community have to choose a name and marry that person. Jake is one of these men the name that was chosen was Maralie. There is chemistry between them without a doubt, but will their past prevent them from having any kind of future? And what will happen when a handsome stranger appears at their door and stirs feelings inside Maralie? This book was awesome filled with great twists and turns. I cant wait to read more of this series!!!!
I think F.A. Rogers sharpened her teeth on this book. It was so good. I really enjoyed the plot twists of this book. He is so caught up on his first wife that he almost misses the one that is living in the here and now. I LOVED THIS BOOK. Support Indie Artists.
Good
Very good book
Not a western on the same level as those I consider great, I think this would be better on the list of good books for pre-teens.

Courtesy, treating people with respect, appreciating what you DO have.
This was a sweet read. I enjoyed the characters and despite the size of the story the characters were dynamic and well developed. The romance and language was clean too. Definitely a good story.
I received this book free from one of the book subscription emails.
This is a clean, lighthearted romance with very interesting twists. The main characters are endearing and I was so wrapped up in the story that I found myself wanting to give them a little nudge now and then. I found the idea of The Board intriguing and it was interesting to see how the author handled making a relationship between two strangers develop. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next one in the series.
