A good read with the introduction of another strong character.
I really enjoy his books.
Really good, well-drawn characters...until the author threw in the spacecraft story. Could have left that premise out and this reader would have been much happier. I read western novels to hearken back to a more simple life, where men and women were challenged by life, and death could be a whisper away. I like the danger, bad vs. good, etc., but can we either have cowboys or space cadets? To the author's credit, I finished the book.
I love all of the books in The Nations series. I just wish he'd bring Bass Reeves back! That's what hooked me on the series.
I did not think it possible to destroy a perfectly good western
tale until Ken Farmer injected some " Science Fiction " into the wild west era.
A cowboy story that shares chapters of science fiction
blends as harmoniously as oil and water.
Screwing up a good western is as appealing as having that
beautiful old standard " Stardust " sung in a new rendition by one of the current popular Hog Callers that they are calling Country music singers ( whatever happened to songs about
Grandma getting drunk and run over by a pick up truck?)
It is near impossible for me to read a bad western due to my
liking the geographical location and the 1800's era but it
has been accomplished by trying to mesh the supernatural
into the lives of cowboys.
I really like the stories this author has released previously when they contained a singular western theme, however, this is the reason there is still a demand for both vanilla and chocolate ice cream.
This is another good story with a solid basis in an overlooked part of American History. Check your facts, and enjoy the story.
