The Purpose of Life, Book/Essay by Nicholas Dima, Exlibris 2014, 98 pp.I have been acquainted with the author for almost 40 years, and throughout these years we conversed on and off about metaphysics, beside philosophy in general. Nick always shared his own experiences ‘beyond the normal’ within our group of like-minded friends, as well as his intention of committing his ideas one day to print. He eventually did this, partly because we encouraged him to do so.
This effort took shape as an essay to combine quite artfully and meaningfully the author’s own experiences - strange dreams and astral projections, interspersed with religious interpretations, philosophical thoughts, and more importantly, validated by some of the most recent scientific discoveries. Through a fast paced narration the author still finds the time and space to mention the views of some of the best writers in the field of metaphysical philosophy of the 20th Century, from G. I. Gurdjieff and P. D. Ouspensky to Edgar Cayce. In doing so, he observes how the aim of research had gradually moved from religion to philosophy, and later, from philosophy to modern science. In pursuing this topic, ‘the purpose of life,’ Dr. Dima keeps quoting steadily from renowned philosophers of antiquity to the latest scientific findings of the Geneva Large Hadron Collider… how Matter becomes energy and energy is transformed into matter… At the microscopic level there is neither past nor future…nothing is gained, nothing is lost… everything is linked together in a perpetual motion… and more importantly, there is no death; only transformation. But life still remains a mystery; the purpose of it is to improve our selves, to achieve spiritual enlightenment…
What impressed me the most, and hopefully will catch most readers’ attention, are some personal accounts of unbelievably beautiful dreams, descriptions of places that could only exist in a spiritual world, in some altered states of mind that only astral projections may induce. I had the good fortune to see the manuscript in several stages of its progress, and I have also read the book in print. By each reading the text became better than the previous one. The book is skillfully structured in relatively short but comprehensive chapters that read easily, in spite of the extra effort and concentration needed for digesting some of the scientific theories. As far as particular religions are concerned, the author’s approach is properly general and non-denominational. What it wants to proclaim is that God is Universal and Consciousness is within everything. We only have to reach out…
